Sad but true, people do lie in online dating profiles. I'm never sure why and I will probably address this very topic in my blog sometime in the next week or two. I'm happy though to see from all the comments here that I'm not alone in my puzzlement...:)

Wow! This guy is so fake. Pretending it's not all about himself, but it is. He obviously only wants slim women, and when they don't turn out like his fantasy then he gets upset. As he said himself... "It's upsetting."

Seriously, if you go on a date after seeing only 5 pictures then either you are the most idiotic person in the world or seriously way too gullible.

I chatted to my partner for 7 months ( a little lesson in love for someone) before I met him in person. Granted I didn't meet him on a dating site, but I still met him online. We shared similar interests and both of us were akward and didn't want each other to see the real us. After the first month or so we both started chatting on webcam and from there our love deepend for one another till we actually met. It's weird when you know someone completely before you have even made love to them, so realistically stick it out and chat with the person. Get to know them before meeting them.

In my case it was the first and only and I ended up travelling across an ocean to be with him.

I don't think lying about height is a serious offense, unless the other person's height is 5' 0" and in the profile it was stated as 6'0". That will be a tall lie.

Well this is one of the disadvantages of online dating: anyone can be anyone. So if you are thinking you will date with a real model that you found on the web, you may be in for a very unpleasant surprise.

It's getting clearer to everyone involved with online dating that lying is extremely shortsighted (destined to bomb that first date). While lying used to be seen as a harmless irritant, folks are getting more and more angry and ready to take action. BTW, the advice above about confronting an obvious lie is excellent.

I have a theory as to why people lie in their profile. Maybe the main idea is to have only online dating, so you may be whoever you want to ... but in a time, you like the person who liked your fake identity, and want to have real date.
And that's when the others got you in a lie ;)

I have no idea why people are using fake photos or pretending to be someone they are not. That is absolutly pointless in case you are actually planing to go on a date with someone who you met online. Of course that when i go to an online date i except to see the same person i saw on the pictures in his/her profile and if i see someone else who is totally diffrent then the pictures i saw i would totally call of the date! I've never ever lied about anything in my online profiles and i would never do. Your chance to get on a real date with real pictures of yourself are bigger then using fake ones, because in that case your chances are zeroed!
P.S. I think that there will be always people out there pretending to be someone else anyway ....
