True.com Settles Class Action Lawsuit

(Online Dating Newsletter) Online dating service True.com has settled a class action lawsuit against it that has been in the court system for two years.  Under the terms of the settlement, True.com must refund $1.5 million to people who were charged after canceling their account then having their account reactivated after clicking on an email link. For years, True.com has come under attack for its sleazy billing practices, which found ways to bill people after they had canceled their accounts. One of the methods was sending out an email with a link in it that automatically reinstated the person if they clicked on the link. For years, True.com also made it difficult for people to unsubscribe, forcing them to call a number and not providing an easy way to cancel the account online.

True.com is being forced, under the terms of the settlement, to revise how it handles its auto-subscription program so that unsubscribing members don’t fall prey to the same practices that result in charges continuing after an account cancellation.

True.com must also provide 45 days worth of free memberships to some members of the class action settlement who didn’t click on an email link but were unfairly charged after their accounts had been deleted.

Any money left over from the $1.5 million will go to pay for legal expenses and the plaintiff, Thomas Wong, who originally filed the lawsuit after being unfairly billed by True.com several times after cancelling his account.

    Any company that has to charge people after they cancel basically is admitting their service or product isn’t good enough to stand on its own. I’d never use their dating site for this reason.

    This is a lesson for all Internet companies who though that they could get away with scheming people (not scamming for clarification) and forcing them to be billed without given consent by customers. It may take enormous effort by any individual to launch such action but it may prove to be worth the time and effort. So save all your transaction records, email conversations , online receipts and other such digital documentations as they can be easily printed out just in case the need for such may arise in the future. (hopefully not)

    Very few people will be using their services because of the scam admitted by the company. Things like that really destroy the company reputation. Like greensmyle said, it’s a lesson for all the internet companies who without the consent of the user charge their card.
