Match.com and IAC Explore Free Online Dating Through DownToEarth.com

(Online Dating Newsletter) The company that owns Match.com and Chemistry.com is now exploring how well a free online dating service will do through the launch of Down to Earth. IAC (InterActiveCorp) owns Match.com and Chemistry.com and is now exploring the growing popularity of free online dating services through DownToEarth.com.

Unlike most free online dating services, which look cluttered, DownToEarth has an elegant and clean design with a focus on making free online dating more “safe” and “honest”. They do this through a system called “RealRatings” which allows you to post generic details about your dates and whether the person was honest in his/her profile (i.e. age, photo, etc.).

According to Markus Frind, owner of the popular free PlentyofFish.com online dating Website, “DownToEarth is headed up by Jacob Solotaroff, the former Directer of Product Management and Member Integrity at Match.com.”

The move comes several years after IAC/Match.com launched relationship service Chemistry.com in order to compete with eHarmony.

At the moment, the business model for DownToEarth.com appears to be affiliate programs. The company advertises Match.com and Chemistry.com (as “partners”), but also does affiliate links to other online dating services (like Date.com and MatchMaker.com) in order to make money off of people that join those services at $40 a pop.

With marketing giants IAC and Match.com behind the project, DownToEarth is likely to grow big and do so at a speedy rate. The Online Dating Newsletter will keep you posted on the services success.

I don’t have a problem with their business model being built around affiliate programs, the site will need to make money in order to stay in business. I hope the DowntoEarth.com site takes off and does well.
